Start a new recording
To start a new recording and transcription, click on New Recording from the start menu options.
The New Recording panel will open, shown below.
1. CATEGORIES - It is possible to create Category Folders for your recording projects. Here you can select the Category Folder name for the new recording files to be saved. The default will be the General Category.
2. RECORDINGS - Shows a list of existing recordings in the selected folder
3. TRANSCRIBE MICROPHONE INPUT - This selects whether you will be recording and transcribing "live" from the built in microphone or one connected to the PC. If not selected, there are two options for Scribe to create an instant transcription from
a. An existing audio file in mp3 format (from any device) can be loaded and transcribed to text. See 7 below.
b. Scribe can transcribe audio content played on your PC, from other browser audio websites or streamed audio applications.
4. NAME - choose a file name for the new recording. The default file name is the current Date and Time (e.g. 17-02-2025 22-44-07)
5. USE PRESENTATION - It is possible to link a presentation document with the audio recording and transcription.
6. CHOOSE - If you want to Use a presentation document, you need to choose the file from your PC. Supported file documents are PowerPointt (.ppt) and PDF (.pdf)
7. EXISTING AUDIO - It is possible for Scribe to transcribe an existing audio file from the PC. You can load the original existing audio file (mp3), and a new recording and transcription is created.
START RECORDING - clicking "Start Recording" will initiate the recording of the audio and the capturing of the instant transcription, phrase by phrase.
When you select a New Recording, the Windows 11 Live Caption panel will also open, and will start to capture (caption). However, the recording of audio and capturing of the captions by Scribe will not start until you press the "Start Recording" button in Scribe If the Caption panel is closed then the caption process will stop (but you can still make audio recordings and notes as normal). You can change the position of the Caption panel to the top of the screen, bottom of the screen or floating. It can also be minimised (see below)
It is possible to Hide the Captions window, so that it doesn't distract, by select the option from the Scribe Settings (shown below).
